The little I do know about sewing came from my grandmother. We used to make doll clothes, mostly dresses and aprons. She taught me how to cut out patterns and pin them to the fabric and she showed me how to use the sewing machine. We also made bonnets out of cardboard, fabric, string and glue. And we made lavender sachets out of pieces of her wedding dress- white silk with embroidered violets. These I sold the following summer at the island studio tour. She also taught me how to sew on buttons and make button holes too. One time she and my aunt made a dress for me based on the outfit of my favorite fairy statuette, and I wore it for Halloween with a green feathery mask. It used a variety of fabrics, mostly greens and earthly tones, with dashes of purple. The sleeves were silvery and lacy, like a gossamer spider web. It was the most wonderful gift.
My grandma passed away over a year ago. I only wish I could have spent more time with her. She was an amazing woman.
